Devon Bennett Research Paper

Free Write 5-9

This is the last free write of the class.  I feel as though this is something that has benefited me as a writer and has allowed me to express my feelings towards differnt ideas by writing.  I believe this has helped me become a more effective writer on the fly which in certain situations in life can be beneficial.  I am currently planting my elderberries and am loving the rain due to the fact that they are sensitive the first couple weeks after being transplanted so this is a very good day for me.  I feel as though I am a very lucky person to be in the position I am in.  I have talked about my elderberry thing in the past and am still working on that but currently am working on another deal that will build and distribute a new ambulance piece.  This piece came to my mind sitting in class one day and I did the research through pattent offices and a patent lawyer and they say their is nothing out their like it.  I also went to ambulance manufactueres to try and find the product and they dont have it either.  It is a suspension system unit that goes underneath the cot between the floor and the cot that when the ambulance is moving becomes an air ride individual cell inside the ambulance.  This will be very affective in transporting long distances or for broken bones and neck and back injuries.  The number one complaint of people who ride in ambulances is that they feel every bump in the road and it shakes them to their core.  I feel for these people becasue most of them are going through a tramatic experience and need to be allowed some sort of comfort.  The product will be developed in the next three or four months hopefully ready to be unvailed at the Las Vegas EMS convention the first part of September.  I and my partner are really hoping this does what it could and we can becoem leaders in ambulance parts manufacturing.

I did not sleep very well last night.  I got a call from my grandpa who is very involved with me starting my new company.  He is a very successful business man himself but has never played at the level I am about to get into.  I am his only grandchild besides two step granddaughters so I get a lot of attention.  He started with asking me my goals and what each individual brings to the table in the current deal I am working.  I had to think about it and I came up with a list that closely resembled what he has done.  He then asked what each of the individuals wants that are getting into this deal.  I answered with a somewhat different approach then he had but I ended up going with his.  Once I found out these details the whole thing started to play out.  I realized that what each person wanted and what I wanted fell into place with with the strengths and weaknesses of what each individual possess.  I then got to look at percentage of each company and what they would want in return.  I found that I would get to get a piece of everything with the percentage scale I set up.  The lady wants a $200,000 share bought to enter into her company which would give us 20%.

Today is a crappy day outside.  The weather is just nasty.  It is sleeting and raining and about 34 degrees.  I love having the rain but could it not wait 4 or 5 days before it comes again.  I am really looking forward to spring and the warm weather.  This spring will be a busy one for me but I am looking forward to the challenge that is will put upon me.  The Cardinals started their season last night and they looked alright but got the loss to a good Arizona team.  I hope that Wainwright can get is stuff together and be the pitcher he was 3 years ago before Tommy john surgery.  Last weekend was Easter and I had to visit with lots of family.  Now I like to do this but after a whole day with some of the family that you font want to be around your ready to be back to normal and I was.  I fortunately got to watch the college basketball games to pass some of the time and ignore some of the endless chatter that was going on around me.  The injury that Kevin
Ware suffered was terrible.  He broke his leg in a way that I have never seen before and had to be taken by ambulance to the Methodist hospital there in Indianapolis.  There was some good news today though, he had a successful surgery and will be able to leave the hospital today.  He also should be able to play basketball again at some point in the future.  This weekend is the final four along with the division II and III championships in Atlanta.  My grandpa and I are planning on flying down on Saturday and watching the Drury game because admission is free for whoever shows up and he is a graduate of there.  It should be an interesting game because everything that I have heard is the other team is very good and Drury is the underdog.  I hope that they get the win so the trip will be worthwhile.

Today is a good day I feel for me.  I believe that I have just in the last three to four days stumbled upon a real game changer on what could be my future.  I was contacted by a lady that was refered to me by one of the University of Missouri research experts.  She had heard I was very interested in the Elderberry market and she is in the process of creating a huge dietary supplement and juice company.  THe main products will be elderberry with other things like blueberry and aronia as well.  She is really wanting me to invest in this company so I can become a partner which I would love to  do. This was however, not the main reason she called.  SHe called because she was interested in the plan I had designed on how to grow the berries on a very commercial scale.  I believe that the only way to successfully grow this type of plant is to do it with very close attentiion to detail and how else to do it then supply the product to people to grow that you had already and make sure they are buying the fertilizers and irrigation through me as well.  I felt as though I would model it after the chicken house theory that Tysons and Georges uses to produce chicken.  They are contacted by potential farmers who have interest in putting chicken houses up.  THe farmer is responsible for the land and the buildings and Tysons will provide the chicken and feed as well as guarantee that they will buy the chickens and pay them as almost a rental fee per chicken that survives.  I will do the same except I will pay per pound of berries that they produce.
One of the problems is being all organic it is hard to get rid of disease.  Becasue the university does not have much research on how to get rid of the disease I decided to spread this operatiion out over about three states which would be Missouri, Arkansas, and Louisiana.  This also for frost and water purposes as well.
THis lady that approached me was the founder of dynamic lasering.  THis is a company she formed in california and sold out to a very well kown laser company and then moved back to Missouri and started anther one in her home town of Herman.  She believes that this compnay we are in the process of forming is going to be in the billion dollar range in roughly 10 years which is something that is far fetched but could be attainable with the product supply attained and the mass marketing goes to plan.  She is working with a lead advisor doctor to Dr. Oz which is the famous tv show and when they say something the thing goes viral.  SHe also has a firend in China that is married to a news reporter and magazine writer that will be the marketing there and then also she is going to South America to get it rolling down there this summer.  The US is very tricky but she has already made contacts with Wal-Mart and other big retailers so that should be very big.  With all this internationl attention she will need the product to support it so thats were I come in.  With talking to her she and I feel that we will need around 200 acres of these plants which would create on the third year around 2 millions pounds of berries.  THis is a considerable amount becasue we would buy them from the farmer for around .90cents and resale them for around $2.25 which would make somewhere around 3-5 million a year.

Survivor Testimony

“Malka Baran”

Malka Baran was born in Warsaw Poland in 1927 to a Jewish family that did not celebrate the Jewish culture as most did.  They were a family that did not follow the religion closely.  They moved when she was one year old to Czestochowa Poland were she spent the next 14 years of her life.  She had a brother that was two years younger than her and they lived a very simple life.

She found out later that her grandparents were killed and her father stopped believing in God as much after that loss.  In 1929 she said that the lives of her family changed.  The SS officers came into town and put rules and regulation of the Jews.  Their apartment was turned into a ghetto and they did not go to school and more they worked for the Germans.  Shortly after in 41 she was awaken by her parents early one morning and they went into the street where she her brother and her father were separated from their mother and they never saw her again.  They were taken to another place to work and she didn’t remember the name.

Soon after her mother was taken her father and brother were working on the railroads and were both shot in the back and killed.  She immediately put a block on her memory and literally can’t remember anything until she was sent to a concentration camp in 43.  This concentration camp she stayed in until 45 when liberation came.  She was always very good with children and so she decided to help children who were displaced with the war.  She soon met her future husband who she thought of as a brother before she moved to Israel.  After moving to Israel he came back from the United States to ask her to marry him and she did however she because of her paper work could not move to the United States until 10 months later.  When she did they lived in Brooklyn and had children.

Survivor Testimonies

“Edith Coliver”

Edith Coliver was a survivor who was actually not in Europe while the worst of the killings were taking place.  Coliver actually got out of Germany in 1938 before all of the Jews were starting to be exterminated.  Her father got her whole family visas and they sailed across the Atlantic to New York City.  She shortly after moved to San Francisco where she attended school and graduated from Berkeley.

After graduating she moved to Washington D.C. where she found work as an assistant to a senator.  She found herself looking for work shortly after however because she didn’t like her job.  She was very fluent in German and French so she found a job as an interpreter at the Nuremburg trials.  She was interviewed by many people including the United Nations head of interpretations.  She got the job and found herself faced with what she narrowly escaped and moved to America from.

In Germany she got to interpret the trials of all of the highest officials of the Nazi party.  She found herself faced with the fact that all of the Germans where wanting to escape and say as though they had no idea what was going on.  She knew this was untrue however because they knew about it all the way in the United States.  The trials that were ending in most of the officials getting hung were very hard for her because she was tired of the killings.

One of the things that she talked about in the interview that I found as being very interesting was the fact that Roosevelt did not help the Jews and she was very upset about it.  According to her he knew about the stuff going on and the deaths and didn’t do a lot to help.  This is something that I myself had never heard before.

In closing I feel as though this lady although not being in Germany and dealing with the concentration camps first hand did get to see the true utter destruction.  She was there after and got to help clean up the mess therefore did understand it.  I feel as though she is a hero stepping up and helping put away a part of history that so many people want to forget.

1.      “Jew’s have no demeanor or character.”

It is starting to look like spring.  The weather has been an up and down venture the last couple months.  This week seems to show promise that spring is on the way.  Yesterday it hit 65 and today it is only 40 for a high.  This up and down is hard on everybody but it looks as though after today we start going up hill and at least staying more level in regards to temprature.  One thing I love about spring is the vegetation.  I hate winter for about three reasons.  The first is the cold.  I really do not like cold weather and it really jsut puts me in a bad mood.  THe second is the sickness that goes with it.  Winter is the worst season in regard to sickness we have.  THis year had been one of the worst on record with people even dyeing with the lastest outbreak of this years flu virus.  The last and probably the part that bothers me more than anything is the vegetation.  THe winter is very dark, the flowers are hibernating, the trees have no leaves, and the grass for the most part is brown.  The one thing that really makes me start to feel better other than teh warmer weather is the foolage.  The trees starting to turn green as well as the grass is something that jsut immeaditly makes me feel better.  I wish the we lived in a place were it was green year round with rain at least once a week always at night however becasue it would not disrupt your day.  I also like the spring because Americas greatest pastime starts, baseball.  I love baseball games they really invite spring in and let everybody know that we are ready to warm up.  I am also excited for spring becasue I am going to plant my elderberry plants in late April which I hope leads to a prosperous venture.  I just talked to a guy that thinks that just on the cuttings alone I could make $50,000 a year.  This goes along with the $50,000 that I should make off the berries as well.  We hopefully will make a dietary supplement out of the concentrate like a one a day mens health pill.

I feel as though today will be a good day.  This week started off with a monday that flew by so I know that if Monday flys by the rest of the week will as well.  One thing that is on my mind today is the weather.  I have to drive an hour to school and it is not fun on ice.  With this said I drive a four door three quarter ton diesel so I should have no problems but ice has a mind of its own.  I am hoping to do a good job on this next essay becasue I would like to get htrough the first three short essays with an A which I would if i get at least a B on this next one.  I am hoping to get all As this semester although I had a little problem with how the structure of the assignments go on one of my online classses so I currently have a C but we have only had 45 points total and just turned in a 20 point assignment that I am fairly sure will be an A paper.  If I get an A on that it will pull me up to a B and then all I will need to do is to continue to get good grades.  Another thing that will help is the extra credit in this class.  I am hoping that with that it puches me up to a high A that will give me some cushion.  Last semester I got a 3.2 overall GPA but came to school with 21 hours of straight 4.0.  With this straight 4.0 it has given me a cushion to get into college shape and learn what teachers want as well as given me a chance to work and not put as much effort as I would have other wise.  I am hoping to finish at OTC next fall which will be 3 semesters here and will graduate with my associates.  I want to get it before I continue on to the next level becasue I dont want the university I transfer to, to say that some of the classes I took dont transfer and youll have to take them again.  If I get the associates then I just have to build on top of what I have.  I will contine here at OTC even if I already have my accociates next semester so that I have soemthing like 75 to 80 hours becasue then I would only lack about 40 hours of finishing which would be about 3 semesters.  Once I finsh at my four year school I should by that time have my business off the ground and will not have to worry about what I got and what I didnt becasue I will have made enough that it dosnt matter.  I also would like to consider my options upon getting my associates and maybe have enough hours toward my 4 year degree that if I wanted to come back I could but that if I had my business up and off the ground I could just run it for the time being but that is something to decide down the road.  This has been the longeest free write we have done so far and I am running out of things to say however I have been told I am a good bser so I will try and continue.

I am feeling good about this semester.  Last semester was my first semsester in college.  I had taken 20 + hours of college in high school but not on campus.  I feel as though I am learning and now understand the system this semester and that is really helping me oput.  I found out yesterday that I have all A's at over a quarter of the way into the semester and it is flying by.  I like all my teachers and are all different in various ways.  I also got my greenhouse done so now all I have to do is take care of them and wait till about April the 25 to plant them in the ground.  In the meantime about the middle of February I will go out to where I am planting them and get it all set up so I can get them in quickly.  I am hoping  that I can get all 6500 plants planted in about a week and a half but will be getting close to the end of school so I will have a lot on my plate.  I am also putting together the plan to ass on to our house and am in charge of keeping it going and everything supplied to them which will start about the first to the middle of MArch.  I designed a plan that would really help accomidate our family better and went to my mom to show her.  We are adding a family room that is a good size room with a bar and pool table in it.  WE are also adding on a spacious master bedroom and closet  as well as a 20*20 basement underneath the bathroom and closet.  I went to her with this already drwn up and she liked it.  I then went to find a contractor and I decided to use a guy that holds his insurance with us.  I beleive that you should keep busness inside the business.  I worked with him closely to get it done and now the dirt work guys are supposed to be there around the first of march to start on our project.

Today I am in a pretty good mood.  I didnt have to go to Alabama last week which would have been nice to get to the beach for a day but it would have been a very quick trip driving about 900 miles.  I will from now on have to go though and not be able to get out of it so easily.  I also in the future will fly when im making such a quick trip becasue even though I get to see other insurance agents on the way and checking on them as I go, I dont get enough time to make up for the gas and the 13 hour drive one way.  I enjoyed watching the grammys on Sunday.  I was pleased to see that they didnt do anything that was over the top like in years past.  I also got my greenhouse finished and have all 6000 plants planted and am on my way to making it good in the elderberry business. I met with a guy that has a certified kitchen and will be willing to help me take ekderberry juice and mix with other juices and make a helth juice.

Today I am not feeling the best.  I was awake a bunch of times last night not feeling well.  I hopw that I will get over it today and will be fine.  I am in the middle of planting 6000 plants in my greenhouse so am putting in a lot of hours on the side as well as keeping up on school.  One of the good things about this is that we will hopefully be getting these plants done in the next couple of days.  I have to give a speech today on pet peeves.  This speech has to be 4-6 minutes and right now I am at about 5 which shoukd be good.  I hopefully will be able to remember it and can continue to get better as a speech writer and giver.  I am currently doing good in class but hope to get better in areas.  I may not be at class on thursday becase I am giving a speech today and dont have to be there thursday and we have a problem with an agent in Alabama so I need to go down and check on him.  If I go i will leave today and be back friday night.  THis agent is located in southern Alabama and is near the coast.  The fun part about this trip is I would stay near the beach and would spend part of a day at the beach.  He is in Moblie so there is about 30 minutes from his office to the beach.  It take roughly 14 hours to get to his office and I will most likely see some agents on the way.  I will probably stay in Tennessee or Mississippi somewhere tonight then head on down tomorrow and spend tomorrow after noon with him.  Thursday I would try and see some other agents on my way back north.

Today is a good day. I love wakling up to sunshine and driving in it. I wish it was a little warmer so that I wouldnt have to go out and start my truck twenty minutes early but htats life. One thing about today is that it is my last day of class for the week.l I have an online class that I have to work on but Other than that I am done, I just made plans to go to California in march over spring break. We will leave the Friday before it starts but I wont miss any class. I am going to work most of the time however. I am going to a health product convention in Anaheim at he convention center to try and find a distributor for elderberry goods. THis will help me in the process of making a product that will increase my revenue and not just sell the berries. THis is soemthing that I have been planning for a while but just finalized yesterday. I have been to California becasue of this project 5 tiemes in the last year. This time will be different however becasue this time we are going to stay at my grandpas best frinds condo in northern San Diego. It is a beach front condo and is very cool. I am looking foward to being in california over spring break as well never been there during this time but I hear it is amazing. While there we are going to also do a little sightseeing not hjust work. We will stay for about 4 nights and 5 days. This will allow us to see parts of warner brothers and universla studios. We will also visit Disney Land and other attractions in Los Angelos. The goal of this trip is to come back home with 5-10 possible distributors or buyers of the products that we can farthur work a deal with. THis would be the ultimeate goal. I am also planning a trip to north carolina to one of the largest health supplement makers in the country. I am hoping I can get aquainted with them and maybe a you scratch my back ill scratch your business deal. THis is all a hope although I do have soem already interested in backing the business. I will be ready to start production a year from July and with that hope to be able to attend more of these conventions

I am in a good mood today. The only thing I am worried about is that we are supposed to have striong winds and I just finished building a greenhouse and have roughly 10 thousand dollars worth of plants in it and I dont want it to blow away. I called and had my hired hand throw straps across it and tie it to my work vehicle at the place the greenhouse is at so hopefully it will be ok. I am also in the process of getting all the bids and designs together to add on to my parents house. THey left me in charge and said get it done so I am. We are addign a new family room bathroom basement and closet. THis will be approximatly 45*25. THe hard part about this process is the time. You have to deal with the dirt work guys and the concrete guys all on seperate time tables from the contractors. I have found a way to save money by buying the materials myself and bringing them to the workstie. THisw cut roughly 3000 dollars off of the price. I am in the next week going to have to plant those 10000 dollars worth of plants which is roughly 6700 plants into 4 inch containers and make sure they stay warm and are ready to plant in april. We will start planting the 3rd week in April and will wrap up in the first week of may. These platns will mature quickly and by the middle of july they will have berries ready to harvest. We will not harvest the first year however do to the integrity of the plant. We will harvest the next summer and the plants make roughly 8000 dollars to the acre. I am putting in 7 acres and looking to put in 13 more next spring. I love agriculture and have been fortunate to find an opportunity to sell these berries to a winemaker. He is also looking to expand into Missouri and wants me to help get him established which will be a nice paycheck. I am very fortunate to be where I am becuase as soon as I get it ready I have a buyer wanting to buy part of my berrries for dietary supplements.

I am here this mornign.  I did not want to come this mornign and it was hard to get up.  I live an hour away so the drive is not fun either.  I normally like mornings vut this moring I am more tired then I normally am.  I Also have to give a speech today and that just stinks.  I am typing and it is kind of hard becasue my fingers are very cold.  One of the things that I like about coming so early to class though is that I can leavve by noon and get home.  I went top watch a movie on Friday called silver lingingns playbook and it was amazing.  Bradley cooper did an outstanding job at acting out his roll as a mentally challenged bipolar case.  Jennifer Lawrence also did an outstanding job at showing how she took the death of her husband and turned it into rage and then into love.  THis has got to be one of the best acted movies I have seen in quite sometime.  I am actually going with my mom today she couldnt go on friday so she wants to go today,  This gives me a great chance to not only see it again but to really see how they act and nopt just have to really be following the story.
My family is in the process of getting plans together to ass on to our house.  This is something that they are having me do because I know everyione they say and I know how to get it done less then what the normal person would pay.  We are hopefully going to have it ready to go this friday.

Intro

This is my second full semester at OTC.  I graducated last year from Purdy High School, which is about 60 miles southwest from here.  Where I am from there is about two things that everyone participates in church, and sports.  I played four years of varsity basketball and baseball starting almost all four years.  I currently working at my families insurance agency.  We own and operate a regional marketing office in the life, health, and senior markets.  We represent about 500 agents and travel over eight states to see these agents.  I myself along with my grandpa am in charge of marketing, going a checking on these agents once or twice a year.
I love to travel.  I have been to four continents, North America, Europe, Africa, and Europe.  My favorite place I have been was Egypt.  In Egypt we spent seven days floating the Nile River and touring all of the famous pyramids.
If I could do one thing I would spend my whole life traveling around and seeing the world.  The world is a awesome place and seeing how different people interact with others is something I really love to see.

One of my favorite things is sports.  I like to watch and play almost anythings related to sports.  One of the coolest feelings is when you see a complete underdog accomplish something that no one thought that they wold.  I played basketball and baseball in high school becasue our school did not have football.  If we would have had footabll I definitly would have played though.  Basketball was my fovorite game to play however.  I played shooting guard and back up point guard.  I averaged 15 points my junior year and 18 my senior year.  I shot a lot of three pointers and was a very high percentage shooter.  I had to be good at shooting becasue athletically I was not gifted with the abilioty to jump so I made up with it by being ghood at shooting.  I played vartsity all four years of high school and was all conference and all district for two years.  The other sport I played baseball I could have been a lot betyter at if I would have worked harder at it.  I was one of the leaders on the team that knew exactly when to be serious however.  I was a center fielder and could throw the ball a long way which made up for me not beign super fast.  I also was very good at getting jumps on the ball so that I could make up for the slower speed.  I was an above averasge hitter in high scholl starting all four years on varsity but just never found it as wxciting as basketball.
I love college basketball and football and some NBA.  My favorte school is Mizzou and I follow everythign that happens with them.  One of the cool things is now Mizzou is in the SEC so I can follow Alabama which is the premier program in the cojuntry./  I really enjoy watching coach Saben becasue he is definitly one of the best coashec on the league.  I also like the southern mentality with football.  They take it seriously and are one of the biggest recruiting areas in the country.
If I was to have a boy one day I would definitly want him to play football and hopefully quarterback.  If I had a girl she would be good at volleyball.  My uncle was assistant volleyball coach at MSU and MSSU for about 10 years and still coaches elite clubs in the area.  I think that will help ehr with her futrue in that career.
I am also very into music.  My grandmother was a music teacher more 25 years and graduated from MIzzou with her masters in music education.  Her favorite thing is musci and she quit teached when she started to get larengitus a lot.

I like to travel.  I spend a lot of time on the road traveling for my family going anywhere from Kansas to Albama.  One of my favorite places is the south where all the people are very frioendly.  They love that you are there and want to make you feel welcome.  My favorite place is either Louisana or Alabama because of this famliy feeling.  The people here will talk to you about anything and still have that feeling of sitting on the front porch and knowing their neighbor.  When we I travel I go and call on agents.  We own a regional marketing office so we are the overhead to over 500 agents in 8 states.  We go into theeir office and tell them we are going to add value to their business.  One of the first things we do is ask wether they would like to increase their income.  this immeaditly gets their attention becasue what person doesnot want this.  We then explain to them we take nothing off what they would make we to an overide which is a commision that is based on a percentage.  For instance the agents would get 100% and we would get 18 - 25 % over that.  We will go to all the main street property and casulty insurance agencies we can find in towns mostly rual areas.  The reason we do this is beacause they generally need to get a hiogher income becasue property and casulity insurance companies are always cutting comissions. After I tell them about adding value to their business I ask them wether they sell life and health insurance.  If they do not we try to help them learn if they do then we try and help them get better.  We represent the top thirty companies in the country so they at all times would be getting the best deal.  We have to be careful as to what companies we go to becasue for instance you cant go to what they call a captive agency you can only to to independent agencies.
